Supporters of West Virginia University raised a record $46.2 million on March 26 during the eighth annual Day of Giving. The online fundraising event also saw a record number of over 10,300 gifts.
WVU President Gordon Gee expressed his appreciation: “I am humbled to see the tremendous generosity and support for West Virginia University year after year during the Day of Giving. That support is an essential component that allows the University to make a difference in the lives of people in West Virginia and the world.”
This year's theme, "Go above. Go beyond.," focused on the need for private donations, with an emphasis on scholarships and attracting new donors. More than 1,300 gifts were from individuals identifying as first-time donors.
Significant contributions included a $2.15 million commitment from Terry Stockman for the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, and the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Roger O'Dell donated $750,000 to WVU Institute of Technology at Beckley, and Nemacolin made a $279,000 donation to WVU Tech.
Social media played a key role throughout the day, with hourly challenges and participation gifts engaging the community.
Kristen Shipp, executive director of annual giving for the Foundation, stated, “I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who participated in Day of Giving, helping us build excitement and provide much-needed funding to WVU. Having so many supporters come together like this on one day is a testament to the loyalty and generosity of Mountaineer Nation. We are thrilled that our students, faculty, staff, friends and patients will benefit now and for many years to come.”
Since its inception in 2017, WVU Day of Giving focuses on raising funds for the University’s key priorities, including scholarships and unrestricted funds at both university-wide and specific unit levels. It also includes WVU Health Sciences, WVU Medicine, and regional campuses in Keyser and Beckley.
Efforts to promote the event involved emails and social media outreach to alumni and supporters. Donations were facilitated through an online platform at dayofgiving.wvu.edu.
Overall, WVU Day of Giving has generated over $142 million from more than 46,000 gifts in eight years, benefiting various programs and initiatives.
