A new professorship has been established at the West Virginia University (WVU) College of Law, thanks to a gift from the Deem family of Bridgeport. The Patrick D. Deem Professor of Law will provide faculty support for research, teaching, and service with a focus on real estate, energy and natural resources, or business law.

The professorship honors Patrick Deem's over 50-year commitment to the legal profession. A WVU law graduate, Deem practiced with Steptoe & Johnson from 1969 until his retirement in 2020.

Amelia Smith Rinehart, William J. Maier Jr. Dean and professor of law at WVU, expressed gratitude for the gift: “We are so thrilled to receive this transformational gift from the Deem family.” She added that it would help recruit and retain excellent faculty in critical practice areas important to students and the state.

Patrick Deem's career centered on energy industry-related legal matters such as real estate and mineral rights. He held leadership roles within his firm and was involved with both the American Bar Association and West Virginia Bar Association.

Alison Deem reflected on her husband's career: “The practice of law was such a central part of Pat’s life for so long, bringing him purpose and happiness.” She emphasized their gratitude towards WVU College of Law for its impact on Patrick's life.

Both Patrick and Alison have supported WVU through scholarships and contributions benefiting arts education programs at the university. Alison has also served in various volunteer roles at WVU since earning her bachelor's degree there in 1970.

To honor their legacy, the Art Museum of WVU is hosting an exhibition featuring artists who participated in the Deem Distinguished Lecture Series until May 11.
