West Virginia University (WVU) has introduced the WVU Guarantee, a program aimed at covering tuition and university fees for eligible West Virginia students. This initiative will begin in the upcoming fall semester and is open to resident undergraduate students across the WVU System, which includes campuses in Morgantown, Institute of Technology, and Potomac State College.
The program targets students with a family adjusted gross income (AGI) of $65,000 or less who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually. Upon submission of their FAFSA forms, students are automatically considered for the WVU Guarantee without any additional steps required.
The university assures that if a student's family AGI surpasses the $65,000 limit after initial enrollment as an undergraduate, they will still receive the program's benefits. Steve Hahn, interim vice president for Enrollment Management, described WVU Guarantee as a "last-dollar-in" program that complements other scholarships and financial aid to alleviate financial pressures on students and families.
Hahn highlighted that this initiative builds on positive trends in student applications at WVU, noting an approximate 16% increase compared to last year’s enrollment cycle. “By presenting greater accessibility and affordability to any West Virginian with aspirations to pursue higher education," he said, "we hope to take price considerations out of the decision for even more students to attend and complete college.”
Students are required to submit their FAFSA by August 1st for eligibility in the Fall 2025 semester. The WVU Hub offers assistance for those needing help with FAFSA completion. There is no separate application process for this program.
Vice Provost Mark Gavin emphasized the importance of WVU Guarantee as part of the university's mission to enhance access and foster development among future leaders within West Virginia. “In doing so," Gavin stated, "we are guaranteeing access to extraordinary, challenging, life-changing experiences for our students — whether they’re choosing WVU for the first time or returning home.”
