Battlers Lose Non-Conference Matchup to Salem
Alderson Broaddus Women's Basketball lost to Salem University in a non-conference matchup on Thursday. The two teams combined to shoot 2-40 from behind the arc. The Battlers shot their lowest field goal percentage of the season at 28.1%.
The Tigers would get on the board first but the Battlers would waste no time evening it up with a Cassandra Smith layup. AB took an early 7-4 lead from a pair of Amil Mitchell makes until turnovers by the Battlers allowed Salem to build another small lead. Salem's Aina Maynou would hit back-to-back layups to give the Tigers a 13-11 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter.
Salem connected on two quick buckets out of the break and would keep their lead in the opening minutes. An Iyahnna Williams three and coast-to-coast layup and one cut the Tigers lead back down to just one.
Amil Mitchell drove to the lane where she would draw a foul and the Salem bench picked up a technical, giving Mitchell four free throws. She would connect on three to give the Battlers a 25-23 lead with two and a half minutes to go in the half. The lead didn't last long as Salem went on a quick 6-0 run to close the half up 29-25.
The Tigers once again went on a small run to open the half to jump up as much as 11. AB cut the lead back down to single digits right before the under-5 media timeout.
From there, Salem would take advantage of the shooting struggles of the Battlers and took a 46-33 lead into the closing quarter. The Battlers eight 3rd quarter points ties for their second lowest point total in a quarter this season.
Depth woes showed the most in the 4th quarter for the short-handed Battlers. Salem would take advantage of this, boosting their lead to as much as 23. Iyahnna Williams scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the closing quarter. She would also total seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in the game. Amil Mitchell added 12 points and freshman Brooklyn Godfrey scored her first points of the season.
