Alderson Broaddus University (AB) is pleased to announce that Dr. Hu Fleming, Dr. Karen Larry, and Dr. Charles Smith have been elected to AB’s Board of Trustees & Governors. Filling vacancies on the Board, Smith and Larry began their duties in January, 2022 and Fleming was welcomed June 1, 2022. 

Alderson Broaddus President Dr. James “Tim” Barry commented, “The University draws on the expertise of our Board members to help us determine appropriate policies for effective governance and management, assure financial stability through fiscal policies and controls, and provide encouragement and support to myself and our administration, faculty, staff, and students.”

Dr. Hubert “Hu” Fleming is a 1978 graduate of Alderson Broaddus College. A native of Braxton County, West Virginia, Hu double majored in Chemistry and Applied Mathematics. He went to Cornell University and was awarded M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering. He is also a graduate of Harvard Business School, holding an MBA in international finance.

Hu’s professional career spans 40+ years. Hu is Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley and a Partner at two private equity firms, Antelope Partners and Upwell Water. He was formerly CEO of KMX Corporation and President of Severn Trent. Hu is an internationally recognized authority in global infrastructure, having led some of the world’s largest water, energy, and transportation projects.

Awards include the 2009 GWI Global Water Project of the Year and the 2019 Frost & Sullivan Visionary Innovation Award. He has been invited to speak at the United Nations twice and to several U.S. congressional committees and the European Union. In addition, Hu serves on several board directors and advisors, including West Virginia University, the World Bank, NATO’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Council, and several companies and charitable organizations.

Hu has published extensively and is the author of three books, more than 150 publications, and 12 patents. Dr. Fleming has four children and lives with his wife, Chris, on their horse farm in Churchville, Maryland. 

Dr. Karen Larry retired from the West Virginia Department of Education as Executive Assistant to the State Superintendent of Schools in 2009. Since then, she has been passionately involved with volunteer work around Philippi, West Virginia, in both marketing/PR and planning and working civic activities. In 2012, Karen began working as a part-time employee of ICF, International providing consulting services to education and business, and as the West Virginia State Co-Coordinator for the Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center’s grant to build state agency personnel.

In 2018, she returned to the WV Department of Education for a year as the Acting Special Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools. Karen currently volunteers at Adaland Mansion in Philippi, serves as president of the Philippi Convention and Visitors Bureau, serves as a lector at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, is a member of the church’s social justice committee, is a member of the Philippi Beautification Volunteers and Delta Kappa Gamma Education Honorary.

Karen and her husband Ed have lived in Philippi since 1970, where their twin sons grew up. They enjoy volunteering, gardening, and visiting with family and friends.

Dr. Charles (Chuck) Smith ’69 retired as Associate Director, Pharmacokinetics for PPD in Richmond, Virginia. PPD is a leading global contract research organization providing comprehensive, integrated drug development, laboratory, and lifecycle management services.

Chuck oversaw diabetes and cancer treatment clinical trials for PPD, providing leadership and oversight for strategic client relationships and client portfolios. Chuck received his Bachelor of Science in mathematics and chemistry at Alderson Broaddus College in 1969. He obtained his Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. From the University of Maryland. He also earned an MBA from the College of William and Mary.

For over 20 years, Chuck was a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he taught applied decision analysis, optimization, simulation, statistics, and other courses related to quantitative modeling. In addition, Chuck has authored numerous publications in drug development and operations research.

Chuck is married to Yvonne and has two children and five grandchildren. In his spare time, he is an avid bicyclist.
