A new West Virginia University graduate embodies Ralph Waldo Emerson's saying that “life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.” Robin Anderson, a program coordinator at the Office of Communications, Marketing and Technology in WVU's Division for Land-Grant Engagement, will receive her Regents Bachelor of Arts degree from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences on December 21. The program caters to working individuals balancing professional and personal responsibilities.

“Fear sometimes holds us back from doing things but taking that first step and facing something — just doing it — can help you gain confidence. This program, including the multidisciplinary studies program, helped me immensely with that,” Anderson stated.

Anderson began working at WVU in 2000 and started her college journey in 2005. Life presented challenges as she managed family responsibilities while her husband faced a serious illness. She credits the flexibility of the RBA program for allowing her to balance these commitments effectively.

“This program was good for me, and it fit the needs of my family," Anderson explained. "The RBA program allowed me to move at my own pace."

Her educational experience also fostered valuable connections. Tara Curtis, an adjunct faculty member who taught one of Anderson’s favorite courses on public relations, now leads Anderson’s team in Communications, Marketing and Technology.

“I had lived a little bit of life, so when I was taking these classes, I felt I understood the concepts a little more than students right out of high school,” Anderson shared.

On graduation day, Jorge Atiles will present her degree. Atiles praised Anderson: “Robin is such a great asset to our organization... We are so proud of her commitment.”

Reflecting on her family's educational values—her father attended night classes while working as a coal miner—Anderson wants to inspire others with her journey. She aims to continue learning through master’s degree programs.

“I want my grandsons to know that education is important," she expressed about graduation day emotions.

The ceremony marks both an end and a beginning for Anderson as she celebrates this milestone with family.
