West Virginia University Police issued a Community Notice on Wednesday, September 11, following five reports of thefts from parked vehicles at various on-campus locations since August 31. Two incidents were reported on Tuesday, September 10, at College Park.

In most cases, items were stolen from unlocked vehicles. Chief Sherry St. Clair advised the community to secure their belongings. "Our advice for our students, faculty and staff is to always secure your belongings, whether that be your home, vehicle or other personal items," she said. "Our officers are out continually patrolling campus property, but we all have a responsibility to take steps to try to prevent crimes of opportunity."

University Police Department (UPD) officers are investigating the thefts and have released two surveillance images. Anyone with information is asked to contact University Police at 203-293-COPS (2677) or visit the department at 992 Elmer Prince Drive. Information may be shared anonymously.

WVU has provided several safety tips:

- Lock your vehicle.

- Secure windows and doors while away or not actively monitoring them.

- Check your vehicle often.

- Do not leave spare keys in accessible places like an unlocked vehicle.

- Check your vehicle before getting in and driving.

- Call UPD if anything appears tampered with on campus; contact Morgantown Police or local authorities if off campus.

- Do not drive the vehicle if parts are missing unless it is safe to do so.

- Avoid touching any tools or items around the car and inform the responding officer.

- Call 911 immediately if you believe you are in danger.

- Report potentially dangerous situations or crimes by calling 911 or UPD.

- Download the LiveSafe app for safety alerts.

- Utilize the blue light emergency call system during emergencies on campus.

WVU also listed resources for health, safety, preparedness, and training available at safety.wvu.edu and police.wvu.edu. Students and employees are encouraged to follow WVU Safety and Wellness on Facebook and @WVUsafety on X for updates.
