Culbertson presents research findings

The Appalachian College Association (ACA) recently released the 2022 Ledford Scholarship Award Recipients Presentations. Among them was Alderson Broaddus University student Hailee Culbertson’s research titled “Determining the Accuracy of Snakes as Bioindicators for Acid Mine Drainage in the Central Appalachian Region.”

“Hailee did some fantastic work this summer on the relationship between water snake populations and water quality,” states Dr. Matthew McKinney, Assistant Professor of Environment Science at Alderson Broaddus University. “I greatly enjoyed being her mentor and am very proud of her hard work. Support from the Ledford Scholarship was extremely helpful; certain aspects of the project couldn’t have been accomplished without it.”

The Ledford Scholarship is available to undergraduate students and provides financial support enabling them to work on a significant research project during the summer. Applicants must be full-time students during the academic year the application is made and return to an ACA institution for at least one semester following the research term. They must also have graduated from a high school or been homeschooled in a designated Appalachian or contiguous county defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission and have a 2.0 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale.
