West Virginia University remains on solid financial footing with a “stable outlook,” according to President Michael T. Benson during the Board of Governors meeting held April 17.

Benson reported that the three largest credit rating agencies have reaffirmed positive ratings for the University: an A from S&P Global for “strong capacity to meet financial commitments,” AA- from Fitch Ratings indicating a “very strong capacity for payment of financial commitments,” and Aa3 from Moody’s reflecting “high quality and very low credit risk.” Benson said, “Our financial house is in order with no deficit. This will pay huge dividends as we consider issuing bonds to address acute capital needs. These strong, credit-worthy ratings will guarantee lower interest rates, thus saving the University millions of dollars. Everyone at the University is to be commended for the steps we’ve all taken together to operate in a fiscally responsible way.”

Building on this momentum, Benson introduced Chris Kabourek as the incoming vice president and chief financial officer. Kabourek brings experience from two large public flagship research institutions — the University of Nebraska and The Ohio State University — and will begin his role on June 1. Kabourek said, “It’s an absolute pleasure to join the West Virginia University team. We have an incredible opportunity before us. We’re ready to roll. Let’s Go!”

The meeting also included recognition of staff contributions through the annual WVU Staff Council report. Dianne Stewart, BOG Classified Staff representative and program assistant in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, said, “While buildings and offices define our campus, it’s the Classified Staff who bring West Virginia University to life. We are the hands that maintain this institution and the heart that supports our students, moving from behind the scenes to front and center through dedicated advocacy.” Stewart added that staff remain committed advocates across Morgantown, Keyser, and Beckley campuses.

Representatives from WVU Student Government Association highlighted their achievements over the past academic year while outlining future goals. Colin Street, BOG student representative and SGA president said, “Maintaining direct connections between the Board and the University’s students is vital… During the past year we have worked to establish SGA as a go-to resource for students… In coming year we will continue work embed students in culture community… We want SGA exist in bold fashion beyond our time here.”

In other business at Thursday’s ceremony at Reynolds Hall, Robert “Bob” Reynolds was recognized with WVU John Chambers College of Business and Economics Lifetime Achievement Award.

To address workforce needs in construction management fields starting Fall 2026 semester—a new Bachelor’s degree program was approved by Statler College.
