The West Virginia University Police Department issued a Community Notice on Monday, June 16, following reports of at least one black bear sighting near the Personal Rapid Transit Central Maintenance Facility at 99 8th Street. Officers responded promptly but did not locate any bears.
In the event of encountering a bear, individuals are advised to call 911. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources states that black bears are rarely aggressive and attacks are uncommon. They provide several safety tips for such encounters:
– If you see a bear before it notices you, remain still and do not approach. Move away quietly in the opposite direction.
– If a bear is aware of your presence, do not run as this may provoke a chase. Back away slowly in the opposite direction and wait for the bear to leave.
– Keep dogs leashed to avoid provoking bears into defending themselves.
– Avoid using earbuds when cycling or jogging to prevent surprising bears; stay aware of your surroundings and make noise periodically.
For further safety information, individuals can download the LiveSafe app for direct communication with UPD.
