The West Virginia University golf team tied for second place at the 11th Mountaineer Invitational, held at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, on April 14. The team finished alongside No. 8 Texas Tech with a score of 16-under-par in the 19-team field.
This result is significant as the Mountaineers outperformed several nationally ranked teams during the event. No. 36 Clemson won the tournament with a score of -20, while West Virginia surpassed No. 38 TCU (-9), No. 6 Oklahoma State (-9), and No. 5 Arkansas (-6).
West Virginia had four golfers finish among the top eighteen competitors. Nick Turowski led the team by tying for fifth place at five under par (70-73-68=211). Jack Michael followed closely, tying for eighth place at four under par (74-67-71=212). Ryan Leach tied for fifteenth place at two under par (71-70-73=214), and Kaleb Wilson tied for eighteenth place with an even-par performance (70-74-72=216). Harrison Thompson shot a final round of 68 to tie for thirty-fifth place at eight over par (76-76-68=220).
Several Mountaineers competed as individuals during the event as well. Westy McCabe recorded a final round of 67 to tie for twenty-sixth place (+3 overall), Aidan Dortch tied for thirty-ninth (+5), Brody Burgess also shot a final round of 67 to tie for forty-seventh (+6), and Gabe Schmitz completed his rounds eleven over par.
Looking ahead, West Virginia is scheduled to compete next in the Big 12 Golf Championship from April 27 to April 29 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
