West Virginia University announced on March 27 that the scheduled rowing competition against Robert Morris and Marietta has been canceled because of unsafe river conditions.
The cancellation affects the Mountaineers’ plans to launch their third varsity four (3V4+) and fourth varsity eight (4V8+) boats in the event. The university did not provide details about rescheduling or alternative arrangements for this particular matchup.
Despite this setback, West Virginia’s rowing team will proceed with its spring racing schedule at the Sarasota 2K. According to the university, heats for various boat classes are set to begin later today, starting with the second varsity four (2V4+) at 2 p.m., followed by first varsity four (1V4+) at 3:30 p.m. The second varsity eight (2V8+) and first varsity eight (1V8+) heats are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 4:50 p.m., respectively.
Championship races at Sarasota will commence Saturday morning at 8 a.m., culminating in the grand final for the first varsity eight at 11:50 a.m. Additional information about the Sarasota event is available through resources provided by West Virginia University.
The change in schedule highlights how weather and environmental factors can impact collegiate athletic events, requiring teams to adjust their plans quickly.
