The West Virginia University baseball team will begin NCAA Regional play against Binghamton at Kendrick Family Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. on May 29. The Mountaineers enter as the No. 1 seed in the region and hold the No. 16 national seed, while Binghamton is seeded fourth in the region.
Earlier that day, No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 3 Kentucky will play at noon as part of the same regional bracket. The West Virginia versus Binghamton game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Tom Hart and Jensen Lewis providing commentary, and it can also be heard via radio affiliates through the Mountaineers Sports Network, Varsity Network, WVU Gameday App, and WVUSports.com.
West Virginia comes into the regional with a 39-14 overall record after finishing second in the Big 12 Conference with a 21-9 mark. This marks their seventeenth regional appearance in program history and their second under head coach Steve Sabins, who is in his second year leading the team. It is also their sixth appearance in nine seasons—including consecutive trips from 2017, 2019, 2023, and 2024—and marks their first time making four straight regional appearances since between 1961 and 1964 as well as their first time hosting since 2019.
Several Mountaineer players received conference honors this season: redshirt junior Maxx Yehl was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year; sophomore Chansen Cole and graduate student Ian Korn joined Yehl on the All-Big-12 First Team alongside sophomore catcher Gavin Kelly; senior outfielder Paul Schoenfeld made Second Team; graduate student Reese Bassinger, senior Carson Estridge, junior Armani Guzman, sophomore Matt Ineich, and graduate student Sean Smith earned honorable mentions.
Binghamton enters Morgantown with a record of 31-20 after winning both America East regular-season (17-7) and tournament titles for a second consecutive year. Catcher Tommy Popoff, second baseman Sean Sweeney, and outfielder Matt Bolton were selected to America East’s All-Conference First Team; starting pitchers Conner Griffin and Jackson Mitchell along with third baseman Tim Hennig and outfielder Braylen Gonzalez made Second Team; pitcher Mason Holloway was named to the All-Rookie Team; head coach Tim Sinicki earned his seventh America East Coach of the Year honor.
The winner of Friday’s contest will move forward to play Saturday at 5 p.m., while Friday’s losing team will compete at noon on Saturday.
