The West Virginia University baseball team won the conclusion of a suspended game but lost the regularly scheduled contest against Cincinnati on April 25. The first game, which resumed in the 12th inning tied at 5-5, saw No. 12 West Virginia score four runs in the 13th to secure a 9-5 victory over Cincinnati at UC Baseball Stadium.
This result brought West Virginia’s record to 28-11 overall and 13-7 in Big 12 conference play, while Cincinnati moved to 28-17 overall and 9-11 in conference games.
In the completion of Friday’s suspended game, sophomore Chansen Cole pitched two outs in the bottom of the twelfth before West Virginia took control with four runs in the thirteenth. Redshirt freshman Maxwell Molessa delivered a two-run single for the go-ahead runs. Senior Paul Schoenfeld added another run with a bunt single that resulted in an error, and senior Ben Lumsden contributed an RBI groundout for insurance. In response, Cincinnati loaded the bases in their half of the thirteenth inning but Cole induced a double play to end it.
In Saturday’s scheduled game, Cole started again for West Virginia but allowed two runs over three innings while striking out four batters. The Mountaineers tied it up with two runs in the fourth inning—graduate student Sean Smith had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch—but Cincinnati responded by scoring twice on wild pitches in the fifth and adding an unearned run in the sixth. Sophomore Joshua Surigao kept his team close with nearly two scoreless innings late, but despite loading the bases with one out in their final chance, West Virginia could not capitalize.
The teams are set to meet again Sunday for a rubber match scheduled for a first pitch at 1 p.m.
