Governor Patrick Morrisey announced on May 5 the launch of Ascend Heroes, a new initiative designed to attract U.S. veterans to West Virginia. The program is an extension of the existing Ascend WV initiative and aims to encourage those who have served in uniform to move to the Mountain State.
The effort highlights West Virginia’s ongoing commitment to supporting veterans and strengthening local communities by welcoming new residents with military backgrounds. The announcement was made alongside leaders from higher education, tourism, and military sectors.
Ascend Heroes offers financial incentives for participants, including a $12,000 payment distributed over two years in monthly installments, with an option for a lump sum upon purchasing a home in West Virginia. Veterans accepted into the program can choose from several communities across the state such as Charleston Area, Greenbrier Valley, Morgantown Area, Eastern Panhandle, Greater Elkins and New River Gorge. They have six months after acceptance to settle in their chosen location.
“Veterans represent some of the very best our country has to offer, and we want them to know there is a place for them here in West Virginia,” said Governor Morrisey. “With Ascend Heroes, we are opening the door for those who have already given so much to our country to build their next chapter here while strengthening our workforce, growing our communities, and building a brighter future for our state.”
Brad D. Smith, president of Marshall University and co-founder of Wing 2 Wing Foundation said: “The Ascend Heroes program represents a tremendous opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans while simultaneously strengthening the communities they choose to call home. The Wing 2 Wing Foundation believes that veterans deserve not only our gratitude but tangible support as they transition to the next chapter of their lives.”
West Virginia National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim Seward said: “From the moment I heard of Ascend West Virginia, I knew we needed to be part of it… We look forward to the new West Virginia National Guardsmen who will benefit greatly from this program and find a home here in the hills.”
Michael T. Benson, president at West Virginia University (WVU), said: “West Virginia is a wonderful, welcoming place to live, work and learn with a proud military tradition dating back generations… Through Ascend Heroes we’re inviting veterans… knowing they’ll become vital parts of our communities and find true homes.”
West Virginia University plays an active role as one of three founding partners behind Ascend WV programs; it fosters an inclusive community across distinctive campuses that embraces diverse contributions while aiming for statewide progress according its official website.
