The West Virginia University baseball team won against Kansas State on May 3, completing a series sweep with a 13-6 victory at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improved their record to 31-12 overall and 16-8 in the Big 12 Conference, while the Wildcats dropped to 26-22 and 9-15 in league play.

This game marked the first time this season that West Virginia hit three home runs in a single game. Junior Tyrus Hall, sophomore Gavin Kelly, and graduate student Sean Smith each homered during the eighth inning. It was also the first time since playing Penn State in 2024 that WVU hit three home runs in one inning, and only the fourth such occurrence since 2019.

Several players contributed to the win. Kelly, Smith, and sophomore Matt Ineich each had two runs batted in (RBI), with seven different Mountaineers driving in at least one run. Senior Paul Schoenfeld led with three hits for the day, bringing his total to eight hits over the series.

West Virginia took an early lead after scoring an unearned run due to a failed pickoff attempt by Kansas State. After tying it up in the third inning, Schoenfeld put WVU back ahead with an RBI double before five more runs were added during a strong fourth inning performance.

Kansas State attempted a comeback with a three-run homer in the eighth but could not close the gap as West Virginia responded quickly by scoring six more runs—including all three of their home runs—in their half of that inning. The Wildcats managed two additional runs in the ninth before WVU secured its second conference sweep of this season.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to play Marshall next Tuesday evening at GoMart Ballpark for their final non-conference game.
