The No. 17 West Virginia University baseball team will travel to Tempe to play the No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils in a three-game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, beginning Friday, March 27. The first two games are scheduled for 9:30 p.m., with Sunday’s finale set for 8:00 p.m.
This matchup is notable as it marks the first time both teams have met in a ranked-versus-ranked Big 12 contest while being listed in the D1Baseball rankings. It is also West Virginia’s first such meeting since facing Texas Tech in the USA Today Coaches Poll rankings during the previous season.
Fans can watch Friday and Saturday’s games on ESPN+, while Sunday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN2. Radio coverage will be available through Mountaineer Sports Network, and live statistics can be accessed at wvusports.com.
West Virginia enters the weekend after securing a 3-0 road win against Marshall on Tuesday, March 24. Starting pitcher David Hagen threw three scoreless innings to improve his record to 2-0 this season, followed by Ian Korn and Reese Bassinger who kept Marshall off the scoreboard for five more innings combined. Freshman David Perez closed out the ninth inning for his fifth save of the year as four pitchers combined for a one-hitter.
Pitching matchups are set with Dawson Montesa (4-0) starting against Arizona State’s Cole Carlon (2-1) on Friday; Maxx Yehl (4-0) faces Alex Overbay (0-0) on Saturday; and Chansen Cole (3-0) matches up with Kole Klecker (3-1) on Sunday.
Arizona State is led by head coach Willie Bloomquist, now in his fifth year after guiding ASU back to postseason play with an appearance at last year’s Los Angeles Regional and earning his first postseason win over UC Irvine. At bat, Landon Hairston leads ASU hitting .452 with ten home runs and thirty-three RBIs this season—all team highs—while All-American pitcher Cole Carlon has posted a 3.19 ERA across thirty-one innings pitched.
