The West Virginia University baseball team completed a sweep over No. 7 Kansas on May 10 with a decisive 13-2 win in eight innings at Hoglund Ballpark. The Mountaineers improved their record to 35-12 overall and 19-8 in the Big 12, while the Jayhawks fell to 37-15 and 20-7 in league play.

This marks the first time in program history that West Virginia has swept a top-25 team on the road, and it is only their second ranked sweep overall, following a previous sweep against No. 17 UCF in 2024.

Graduate student Sean Smith led the offense by going three-for-five with a home run and four runs batted in, coming just short of hitting for the cycle. Senior Paul Schoenfeld and junior Tyrus Hall each contributed two hits and three RBI, while graduate student Brodie Kresser drove in two runs. Multiple players scored twice for West Virginia, including Schoenfeld, Smith, senior Matthew Graveline, junior Armani Guzman, and sophomore Gavin Kelly.

On the mound, graduate student Reese Bassinger entered during the fourth inning and pitched five scoreless innings with four strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

West Virginia took an early lead but briefly trailed after Kansas hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Smith answered back with his eighth home run of the season to reclaim momentum for his team. The Mountaineers then broke open the game with six runs in the sixth inning before adding additional runs in both the seventh and eighth frames.

Bassinger closed out the game by striking out his final batter to secure both a run-rule victory and series sweep for West Virginia. The Mountaineers will return home to finish their regular season against TCU from May 14 through May 16.
