Redshirt sophomore Ty Watters was named West Virginia University’s Student-Athlete of the Week, according to a March 23 announcement from the university’s athletics department.
Watters received this recognition after earning his second All-American honor with a sixth-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The award is presented by University Apartments.
He is now only the second Mountaineer in program history at 157 pounds to achieve All-American status. Over the course of the championship weekend, Watters defeated three ranked opponents. He secured a victory by fall over Virginia’s No. 22 Colton Washleski, followed by a 7–1 decision against Penn’s No. 6 Jude Swisher, and then clinched his All-America finish with a narrow 6–5 decision over Cornell’s No. 3 Tyler Shapiro.
Watters’ achievements highlight his continued impact on West Virginia University’s wrestling program and set a notable example for future student-athletes.
