This week in North Central West Virginia history.

Died Nov 13, 2021; known for Farmington roots

Robert Lee “Sam” Huff died on November 13, 2021. He was known for his career as a linebacker in the NFL with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. Huff played college football at West Virginia University and earned induction into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. He grew up near Farmington, West Virginia, and played high school football at Farmington High School. Huff helped lead the Giants to multiple Eastern Conference titles and NFL championship games in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was a four-time Pro Bowler with the Giants and continued to impact the Redskins’ defense after being traded in 1964. After retiring, Huff worked in business and served as a football broadcaster. His connection to Farmington is marked by his early life and high school football achievements in the community. Huff’s legacy includes contributions to football both on and off the field.
