Michael “Mike” John, an executive in the engineering sector, has begun a three-year term on the West Virginia University Foundation Board of Directors. His appointment was confirmed during the board's March quarterly meeting.

John, a resident of Charleston and founder of Northeast Natural Energy, serves as the company's president and CEO. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1981 with a degree in petroleum engineering. Before establishing his company in 2009, John was vice president of operations for Chesapeake Energy’s Eastern Division from 2005 to 2009. During this time, he played a significant role in developing the company’s initial 100 horizontal Marcellus wells across Appalachia.

Before his tenure at Chesapeake, John held senior executive positions at Triana Energy/Columbia Natural Resources and served on its Board of Directors until Columbia Natural Resources was sold to Chesapeake in 2005.

At the same meeting where John's new role was announced, outgoing board member Alan Zuccari was recognized for his contributions. Zuccari, who joined the board in 2011, is from McLean, Virginia.

The WVU Foundation was established in 1954 with a mission to enhance the lives connected to West Virginia University by maximizing charitable support and offering services to the university and its affiliates.
