West Virginia University (WVU) has showcased its research prowess throughout 2024, reinforcing its status as the Mountain State's land-grant, flagship R1 institution. The university achieved a significant milestone by breaking its record for externally supported research expenditures, reaching $275 million. This figure represents an 82% increase over five years. Fred King, Vice President for Research, emphasized that these numbers reflect WVU's commitment to high-quality research.
In addition to financial achievements, WVU researchers received notable recognition on national and international platforms. Astrophysicist Maura McLaughlin was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in May, marking a first for the university. Duncan Lorimer, a professor of physics and astronomy, was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of London shortly thereafter. In October, Dr. Sally Hodder became the first from WVU to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
The university's Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP), which is guided by faculty and managed by the Office of Undergraduate Research, has shown positive outcomes in student retention rates compared to institutional averages. The program also reported higher retention rates among participants from historically marginalized groups.
The Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute at WVU made strides in Alzheimer's research with a study indicating that focused ultrasound combined with antibody treatment can reduce brain plaque in patients. This research received further support through a $2 million appropriation from the West Virginia Legislature aimed at expanding their work.
