West Virginia University will award Presidential Honorary Degrees to three individuals during its Commencement ceremonies on December 21 at the Coliseum. The recipients include Hoppy Kercheval, a veteran broadcaster from West Virginia; David Riggle, a special education teacher in Tyler County; and Nitin “Nick” Kumbhani, an executive in software development and investment management.

The event will feature two separate ceremonies. The morning ceremony at 9 a.m. will recognize graduates from several colleges including the College of Applied Human Sciences and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. During this session, honorary degrees will be conferred upon Kercheval and Riggle. The afternoon ceremony at 2 p.m. will honor graduates from other schools such as the School of Medicine and the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, with Kumbhani receiving his honorary degree.

Kercheval is acknowledged for his extensive career in broadcasting that began when he joined WAJR Radio while studying at WVU. He later became news director after graduating with a journalism degree in 1977. Known as the "dean" of West Virginia broadcasters, Kercheval has been instrumental in expanding MetroNews into digital platforms.

Riggle has been recognized for his contributions to education over more than ten years, teaching world history and special education math at Tyler Consolidated Middle School. He is also involved in coaching basketball and volunteering with the Marshall County Special Olympics.

Kumbhani credits WVU for supporting him through his electrical engineering degree which led to significant roles in developing ATM software and founding Apex Capital Management. His work has influenced both technology and investment sectors.

Additionally, Duncan Lorimer and Maura McLaughlin, distinguished faculty members, will serve as grand marshals during their respective ceremonies due to their notable achievements in physics and astronomy.
