West Virginia University (WVU) is experiencing significant donor support, with new gifts and pledges amounting to over $282 million in fiscal year 2024. This was highlighted during a recent WVU Board of Governors meeting, where Cindi Roth, President and CEO of the WVU Foundation, emphasized the importance of these contributions. "The incredible generosity we’ve seen this year underscores the confidence donors have in our future and their steadfast support of the University’s mission," Roth stated.
Out of $121 million disbursed to the university in fiscal year 2024, $21 million was allocated for student scholarships. The Board also discussed progress on finding a new president for WVU. Dr. Patrice Harris, Vice-Chair of the BOG and Chair of the Presidential Search Committee, reported that WittKieffer is vetting candidates during a "quiet period" and expects to review them through winter.
Current President Gordon Gee expressed enthusiasm for WVU's Degree Up program, which facilitates transitions from community colleges to the university system. He also mentioned several success stories from students, staff, and alumni.
Interim Provost Paul Kreider introduced a new Annual Academic Unit Reporting Process set to begin in 2025. This process aims to evaluate academic programs annually rather than every five years as per existing procedures. Kreider said these checks would help recognize high-performing programs and identify areas for investment.
Senior Associate Vice President for Finance Barbara Weiss reported that WVU received clean audit reports for fiscal year 2024 and anticipates financial stability into fiscal year 2025 due to record-high student retention rates.
The board approved several measures including amendments to travel rules allowing travelers more flexibility in booking arrangements, artificial turf replacement projects at sports facilities, an annual safety plan required by federal law, and land sales to Monongalia County Board of Education.
The public comment period on proposed rule changes will run from November 25 through January 6.
