Battlers Set Two School Records, Place Six in Top-10 During Two- Day Meet
The Alderson Broaddus University men's and women's track & field teams set two school records, place six in the top-10, and ten others in the top-25 during the two-day competition at the YSU Mid- Major Invitational.
At the YSU Mid- Major Invitational, Layla James shattered the school record in the 500m dash on Friday night, running 1:21.47. Also, Shelton Bass broke the school record in the 400m dash while placing 8th overall, running 50.21.
James ran a fast paced race, besting the previous record of 1:24.00 that was set back in 2020 at the WVU Invitational. She was not the only Battler to break the past record of 1:24.00, but she was joined by Trinity Bumbry who ran 1:23.04. Bass clocked a record setting time Saturday afternoon. He broke the previous record of 50.26 seconds which was set in 2019 at the great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.
Placing in the top-10 at the YSU Mid- Major Invite were Bass (8th in 400), Cameron Tropeck (7th in unseeded high jump), Greysen Gerth (5th in unseeded pole vault), James (3rd in 500), Bumbry (6th in 500), and Kaylie Laskody (10th in unseeded high jump).
Placing in the top-25 were Devon Napier (11th in 60), Isaiah Jean (15th in 60/ 24th in 200), Calvin Blunt (25th in 60), Bass (22nd in 200), Jonathan Nagalo (14th unseeded in high jump), Micah Harrison (20th in weight throw), Micah Swann (25th in shot put), James (23rd in 400), Nykia Fort (11th in unseeded high jump).
Napier ran a PR of 7.03 in the 60m dash, while Jean tied his PR in the same race running 7.06, and then ran a new PR of 22.67 in the 200. Bass ran a new indoor PR in the 200 at 22.61. Nagalo cleared the opening height and has a new PR of 1.61m in high jump. Harrison had a team best heave of 13.42m in the the weight throw. Swann tossed the shot put 12.97m. James ran a new indoor PR of 62.22 in the 400. Fort cleared the high jump bar at 1.36m.
The Battlers are back in action this week competing at the Winter Relays, hosted by Virginia Military Institute on Feb 3-4. The two day meet will be had in the Corps Physical Training Facility.
