Men's Basketball Opens Season with Win Over Shaw in Earl Lloyd Classic
The Davis & Elkins Men's Basketball team opened their season with a win on Friday (November 11th) night at the Earl Lloyd Classic, hosted by West Virginia State University. They overcame an early deficit to defeat Shaw University 83-71.
Four Senators were double-digit scorers, led by senior Evan Busby with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Senior Sam Rolle chipped in 15 points and dished out 9 assists. Junior Vadim Clanet dropped a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, a career high. Freshman Clarens Pierre showed early promise, contributing 10 points and 9 rebounds, nearly a double-double, in his first college game.
Defense was the name of the game as D&E held the Bears to just 39 percent shooting after trailing by 6 at the half.
"I am really proud of our defensive effort and toughness tonight," said head coach Daniel Mondragon after the game. "It is what we have been preaching all year and it allowed us to have a chance to win the game. We controlled the glass and the paint against a very tough and physical team. We also had a couple of young guys really step up in their first college action. Good win for us as we move to another tough athletic Livingstone team tomorrow."
