Demetrius Daniels has been named the Mountain East Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance at the Waynesburg Invitational on Saturday.
Daniels had a long road to the championships, winning 5 matches in a row on the day. In the first three rounds Demetrius cruised to 9-1, 8-2, and 7-4 decisions over opponents from Washington & Jefferson, Fairmont, and Heidleberg respectively. In the semi-finals Daniels converted a late takedown to earn the victory over the second seed from Johns Hopkins. The final was a physical, bloody, and spirited bout against the top-seeded Atkinson from Fairmont State. A first period takedown on the edge of the mat gave Daniels an early lead. A pair of escapes and a penalty point for unnecessary roughness evened up the score 3-3 at the end of regulation. In overtime Daniels used a go-behind to earn the sudden victory win and his first collegiate wrestling title.
"This is a really nice honor," stated Coach Sam Gardner. "Demetrius wrestled hard, and was tough in the situations where he needed to be tough. This was his first collegiate tournament championship, and I'm positive there are more to come."
