Santos Team Record Highlights Day 2 of State Games

Davis & Elkins senior Jiwh Santos made history Saturday at the West Virginia State Games when he had a career-best and school record setting swim in the 100 freestyle. His individual race highlighted Day 2 of the competition that saw the men's team finish third and the women's team finish fifth among intercollegiate programs throughout the state.

Saturday's session began with the 400 medley relay team of Casey Hayford, Becca Rodrigues, Shelbey Fuller, and Bryanna Gollmer finishing tenth with a time of 4:19.16. The men's team of Geoff Dixon, Edwin Li, Enrique Garcia, and Vignesh Muley finished fifth with a time of 3:36.48. Payne McCann, Jackson Dearth, Elbert Cooper, and Sebastian Lopez also competed as the men's 'B' team and finished twelfth with a time of 4:06.75.

In the 100 freestyle, Daphne McCann swam to a time of 59.92 and a twenty-sixth place finish. Hayford finished twenty-ninth in 1:01.13 and Maximilla Sutherland finished forty-second in 1:04.50.

Jiwh Santos dropped four tenths of a second from his seed time in the 100 freestyle and jumped from his eighth-place seed to a third-place finish and a school-record time of 46.43. The previous record, set in 2019, was 46.64.

Also placing in the men's 100 freestyle were Muley in eleventh in 49.23, Dixon in twelfth in 49.72, EJ Wright in twenty-eighth in 53.14, Nick Allen in thirty-first in 53.58, Dearth in thirty-second in 53.59, Lopez in thirty-seventh in 55.45, Bernardo Rodrigues in forty-second in 56.19, and Cooper in forty-seventh in 59.55.

In the 200 backstroke, Gollmer finished in a time of 2:21.90 in eleventh place. McCann finished fourteenth with a time of 2:29.09. Maddux finished eighteenth in 2:32.23. Dixon finished sixth in the men's event with a time of 2:03.69 and Ricardo Salas finished twelfth in 2:13.31.

In the women's 200 breaststroke, Fuller finished tenth in 2:33.29, while Rodrigues finished thirteenth in 2:38.60, Vieira finished fourteenth in 2:42.91, Phillips finished twenty-first in 3:01.64, and Workman finished twenty-third in 3:07.68.

In the men's 200 breaststroke, Li finished fifth in 2:11.67. Gage Vondrasek finished fourteenth in 2:31.53 and Xavier Brown finished twenty-second in 2:55.92.

In the 500 freestyle, Gollmer finished fourteenth with a time of 5:39.33. Emily Oldham finished twentieth in 5:54.84. Maddux finished twenty-sixth in 6:23.06.

In the men's 500 freestyle, Rodrigues finished fifteenth in 5:22.15 and Salas finished seventeenth in 5:30.69.

In the 100 butterfly, Fuller finished as the top Division II swimmer in the event in twelfth place with a time of 1:02.51. Lizzy Craig finished twenty-eighth in 1:13.26. Oldham finished thirtieth in 1:13.93.

In the men's 100 butterfly, Garcia also had the top Division II finish at fifth with a time of 52.60. Muley finished eighth in 53.76. Santos finished twenty-fourth in 58.72. Wright finished thirty-second in 1:01.37. Cooper finished thirty-fourth in 1:02.35.

In the 200 individual medley, Becca Rodrigues finished eighteenth in a time of 2:21.56. Craig finished twenty-fifth in 2:33.22. Hayford finished twenty-seventh in 2:34.53. Vieira finished twenty-ninth in 2:36.04. Sutherland finished thirty-third in 2:41.38. Workman finished thirty-seventh in 2:50.49. Li finished fourteenth in 2:09.93. Vondrasek finished twenty-second in 2:16.02. Lopez finished twenty-fourth in 2:17.25. Brown finished thirty-fourth in 2:52.68.

 In the final event of the meet, Rodrigues, Hayford, Fuller, and Gollmer combined to finish seventh in the 200 freestyle relay in at time of 1:47.67. Craig, Maddux, McCann, and Sutherland finished thirteenth with a tie of 1:52.85.

D&E entered three men's relays in the event. Santos, Garcia, Muley, and Dixon combined to finish third in a time of 1:28.89. Allen, Dearth, Li, and Wright finished seventh in a time of 1:32.35. Cooper, Lopez, Vondrasek, and McCann finished thirteenth in 1:38.16.

D&E's women finished fifth of nine teams, while the men finished third of eight teams.

The teams are back in action on Saturday, October 22nd at 1pm when they host Frostburg State University (men and women) and California University of Pennsylvania (women only).
