Davis & Elkins battled throughout the first half of a mid-week Mountain East clash before the Senators poured in seven second half goals to secure a 9-1 victory on Nuttall Field.
It was D&E's first game since assuming the number one position in the United Soccer Association Coaches Poll and Bill Nuttall, whom the Senators' home field is named for was on hand to take in the action. D&E had last been ranked first nationally when Nuttall was a first-team All-American goalkeeper his senior in college in 1970 when the Senators won the NAIA National Championships.
Wheeling opened the game's scoring when Diego Buenano scored off a Salem Mwelwa assist in the sixth minute.
In the twenty-fifth minute, D&E defenseman Davide Materazzi scored his fourth goal of the season following a Josh Gabriel assist.
Manuel Castrejon scored nine minutes later unassisted. The goal was Castrejon's fourth of the season and ended up being the game-winner for the Senators.
It took nearly fifteen minutes into the second half for D&E to begin scoring again, but once they did, they didn't stop until the final horn. Kevin Zapata scored his fourth goal of the season off a Dominque Castano assist.
Christhian Bosquez scored four minutes later. Soshi Fujioka supplied the assist. The goal was Bozquez's fourth of the season.
Zapata scored again in the sixty-sixth minute and then the hat trick in the sixty-ninth minute for goals five and six on the season. Assists came from Yavi Ortiz and Kenshiro Yamaguchi.
Fujioka got into the scoring in the seventy-second minute with an assist from David Jara.
The final two goals of the game were scored by Anderson Marroquin. The first came with eleven minutes remaining in the game and the final goal came with just eighteen seconds remaining. Marroquin's goals were assisted by Ortiz and Jara. He now has four on the season.
Beltran Fernandez had four saves in the game.
In total, twenty-two Senators saw significant playing time in the match. D&E took thirty-six shots and twenty-three shots on goal.
D&E improves to 8-0 on the season and 7-0 in the Mountain East Conference, while Wheeling falls to 3-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the MEC.
The Senators play next on Sunday, October 2 at 7pm at home against Alderson Broaddus.
