2022 Opening Convocation

Alderson Broaddus University commemorated the 2022-23 academic year and welcomed the Class of 2026 to the mountaintop. Students from 20 countries, 33 states, one territory, and the District of Columbia were represented in the colorful Parade of Flags, celebrating the diverse and vibrant students of AB.

The formal Opening Convocation ceremony officially embraced new and returning students and staff to the AB campus. As in years past, Alderson Broaddus will become the home away from home for many, as they entrust the University’s rich tradition of providing the highest quality education.

“It is a great joy to welcome our students back for another academic year – our 152nd”, explains Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Andrea Bucklew. “The Opening Convocation allows us to join together to affirm and grow the sense of community at Alderson Broaddus while we celebrate our diversity, shared values, and mission.”

SGA President Kaylie M. Laskody welcomed new and returning students to campus and announced the 2021-2022 Faculty of the Year award recipient, Adam Anderson, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics. Known for his enthusiasm and passion in and out of the classroom, Dr. Anderson earned the award for his tireless efforts to engage students, instill student confidence to ask questions, and enjoy learning.

Dr. Yi Charlie Chen, professor of biology at Alderson Broaddus University for over twenty years, delivered the Convocation Address entitled “New Beginning.” The spirit of family, friendship, and community were common themes as Dr. Chen welcomed the AB family to the mountaintop. Praising the diversity represented throughout the AB campus, Chen outlined the task ahead for students.

“Your generation is facing the task of making good use of our planet, our God’s creation, to protect it, not to jeopardize or destroy it. Your generation is facing the task of leading the world and keeping world peace while fighting against terrorists and infectious diseases. Your generation is facing the task of keeping the diversity of not only plants and animals, but also of our society, keeping the diversity of thought, diversity of culture, and diversity of belief.”

Dr. Chen recommended, “Let’s honor the conscience of those who disagree with us on certain issues. Let’s make an effort to base our decisions not only on sound science but also on good ethics, as well as respect those who hold different opinions. Let’s treat each other with open hearts and fair-minded words.”

Opening Convocation serves as a formal welcome to campus for students, faculty, and staff alike. Each year, while many aspects of the ceremony remain the same, the combination of student participants, faculty, and the campus community makes each Opening Convocation unique. The atmosphere within Wilcox Chapel this year communicated camaraderie, friendship, and hope.
