Graduate student Sean Smith of the No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, according to an April 13 announcement.

Smith earned this recognition after hitting .600 over four games, collecting nine hits in fifteen at-bats, including four doubles, six runs batted in, and scoring four runs. The Mountaineers went 3-1 during this stretch against Marshall and Texas Tech. Smith recorded a hit in every game and achieved a four-hit performance on Sunday against Texas Tech, finishing the week with a 1.514 on-base plus slugging percentage.

This award marks Smith as the fourth Mountaineer to receive a Big 12 honor this season. Previous honorees include Maxx Yehl (Pitcher of the Week on March 16), Gavin Kelly (Player of the Week on March 2), and Dawson Montesa (Newcomer of the Week on March 2). It is also noted that this is the twenty-first time a West Virginia player has been named Newcomer of the Week since joining the conference, with Smith becoming the nineteenth different WVU player to earn it.

The team will return to action Wednesday, April 15 against Penn State at Meritus Park in Hagerstown, Maryland. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
