West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Ross Hodge announced on April 27 the signing of Martin Somerville, who will join the Mountaineers for the 2026-27 season.
The addition of Somerville is notable as he brings experience from both Florida State and UMass Lowell, where he has shown strong leadership and performance on the court.
Somerville, a junior from Bowie, Maryland, played last season at Florida State. He appeared in all 33 games and started in ten. He averaged eight points, three rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. His standout performances included scoring a season-high 23 points against both Virginia Tech and Jacksonville, as well as recording seven assists against California during the ACC Tournament.
Hodge said about his new recruit: “Martin has all of the leadership qualities and intangibles you look for in a player. He is someone who can play on or off the ball scoring it or making plays for others. He is a connector and has an infectious personality. We are excited to add him to our program.”
Before transferring to Florida State, Somerville played at UMass Lowell where he was named America East Rookie of the Year in 2025 and selected for the America East All-Rookie Team after being named Rookie of the Week eleven times—a conference record. At UMass Lowell he averaged 13.6 points per game while shooting over forty percent from three-point range.
Somerville graduated from Southern California Academy in 2024 with averages of fourteen points and five assists per game.
