West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Ross Hodge announced on May 28 the signing of Joson Sanon to a grant-in-aid for the 2026-27 season.

Sanon, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound junior guard from Fall River, Massachusetts, will join the Mountaineers after transferring from St. John’s.

“Joson has played at a high level for a long time and is a competitor who works at a high rate,” Hodge said. “He’s been well-coached throughout college and has played in high leverage situations including Big 12 games and NCAA Tournament games. We are excited for him to be a Mountaineer!”

During his sophomore year at St. John’s, Sanon averaged 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while starting in 14 of the team’s 37 contests. He was named Preseason Third Team All-Big East and scored in double figures on thirteen occasions, including recording a season-high of sixteen points against Auburn. In the Big East opener against DePaul, he posted fifteen points and collected nine rebounds—his career best—while also making all twelve free throw attempts against Kentucky without missing, becoming the first St. John’s player since 2017 to do so.

Sanon’s freshman season was spent at Arizona State, where he appeared in twenty-seven games with nine starts, averaging eleven point nine points per game on forty-two point two percent shooting from the field and thirty-six point nine percent from three-point range. He recorded notable performances such as scoring twenty-eight points at Utah and nineteen points at Arizona.

Before his collegiate career, Sanon was recognized as a consensus Top 25 prospect coming out of Vermont Academy, where he earned New England Preparatory School Athletic Council AAA Player of the Year honors after leading his team to both a NEPSAC-AAA Championship and an appearance in the National Prep Championship during his senior year.
