West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Ross Hodge announced on Apr. 17 the signing of Javan Buchanan, who will join the Mountaineers for the 2026-27 season.
The addition of Buchanan is seen as significant for the team, as he brings experience and strong performance from his previous programs. He played the last two seasons at Boise State and was recognized for both his versatility and contributions on court.
“Javan is one of those players that everyone loves playing with,” Hodge said. “He has tremendous intangibles and great versatility. Javan makes everyone else better around him and will represent this state in a first-class manner.”
Buchanan, a senior from Lafayette, Indiana, stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs 230 pounds. In his most recent season at Boise State, he started in 31 games, averaging 12.6 points and five rebounds per game while shooting over 42 percent from the field and more than 83 percent from the free throw line. His career free throw percentage of nearly 83 percent ranks third in Boise State history.
During his time at Boise State, Buchanan was named All-Mountain West Honorable Mention last season and received Mountain West Sixth Man of the Year honors in the previous year. He scored a career-high 29 points against San Diego State and recorded a double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds during the Mountain West tournament against San Jose State.
Prior to joining Boise State, Buchanan played two years at Indiana Wesleyan where he was named to the NAIA All-American First Team as a sophomore after finishing fourth nationally with field goals made (273) and sixth in total points (718). In high school at Lafayette Jefferson, he averaged over twenty points per game as a senior while earning Indiana All-Star honors.
The Mountaineers expect Buchanan’s skills to contribute significantly to their lineup when he joins them next season.
