Morgantown Healthcare Center reported the highest average daily resident count among Monongalia County nursing homes in the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility had 120 available beds—24 more than the county average during the period—and an average of 116.6 residents receiving care.

CMS awarded Morgantown Healthcare Center an overall rating of 2 out of 5, trailing the statewide average of 2.9 for West Virginia nursing homes.

Morgantown Heights of Journey|Sundale Nursing Home ranked as the county’s second largest, offering 100 beds this quarter.

CMS records show Morgantown Healthcare Center incurred one fine totaling $24,798 and received one penalty as of the first quarter of 2026.

Monongalia County, West Virginia, had four for-profit nursing homes operating in total.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the nation’s older adult population continues to expand, while younger demographics decline. From 2020 to 2024, Americans 65 and older grew by 13%, while the under-18 population decreased by 1.7%. The country’s older population has increased considerably over the last century, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study estimates that about half of adults in this age range—some 28 million—may require long-term services and support. The study also predicts that more than one-third could eventually need care provided by a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
