Sophomore Gavin Kelly and redshirt junior Maxx Yehl of the No. 9 West Virginia University baseball team were named Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, according to a May 11 announcement by the conference.
These recognitions mark the second time this season that both Kelly and Yehl have received these honors. The Mountaineers have now collected seven Big 12 weekly awards in total during this season.
Kelly had a strong performance at bat over the week, hitting .412 with four home runs, five runs batted in, and six runs scored. He began his week with a two-home-run game against Marshall before hitting home runs in each of the first two games at No. 7 Kansas. Kelly recorded at least one hit in all four games played during the week and scored at least one run per game. His slugging percentage for the week was 1.118, with an OPS of 1.618.
Yehl contributed on the mound by pitching a complete game against seventh-ranked Kansas, striking out nine batters while allowing just one run on six hits. This performance lowered his earned run average for the season to a conference-best mark of 2.04.
Overall, it is now the nineteenth time that a Mountaineer has been awarded Big 12 Player of the Week honors and the twenty-third occasion for a WVU pitcher earning Pitcher of the Week recognition.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to play again from May 14 to May 16 against TCU, with first pitch on Thursday set for 6:30 p.m.
