West Virginia University freshman Jack Michael led the Mountaineers on March 22 in the opening round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay tournament in Awendaw, South Carolina. Michael shot a bogey-free, 5-under-par 67 and is tied for fifth place, three shots behind the leader.
The performance by Michael highlights a strong start for the Mountaineers as they compete in a field of fifteen teams. His round included five birdies and no bogeys.
Seniors Westy McCabe and Kaleb Wilson each finished with scores of one under par. Sophomore Nick Turowski posted an even-par round, while sophomore Aidan Dortch completed his first round at one over par.
After the first day, West Virginia is tied for eighth place with a total score of seven under par.
The team will continue play with the second round scheduled for Monday morning and will conclude with the third and final round on Tuesday.
