Dr. Deborah “Deb” Struth has been named Dean of Fairmont State University’s College of Nursing, the university announced on May 4. She had served as interim dean since April 2024 and now takes on the position permanently.

The appointment is significant for Fairmont State’s efforts to strengthen its nursing programs and respond to the need for skilled healthcare professionals in West Virginia. The role includes oversight of all nursing degree and certificate programs, compliance with state board requirements, maintaining accreditation, curriculum development, faculty recruitment, fiscal management, and building clinical partnerships.

“Deb Struth has demonstrated steady leadership, sound judgment, and a clear ability to lead through periods of transition and growth,” said President Mike Davis. “She has earned the respect of the faculty and colleagues through her work, her experience, and her commitment to academic excellence. I have every confidence in her ability to continue strengthening the College of Nursing and advancing its role within the University and the state.”

One key responsibility for Struth will be overseeing a new $3.6 million nursing simulation lab equipped with advanced technology such as artificial intelligence tools that simulate real-world hospital settings. This facility aims to provide students with hands-on learning experiences outside traditional classrooms.

“With her now in full capacity as Dean, and with her deep experience and expertise, I am confident that Dean Struth and the College of Nursing team will elevate the standing of Fairmont State University’s nursing education programs in West Virginia,” said Provost Allen Bedford.

Struth brings over four decades’ experience in nursing education leadership roles including faculty recruitment, curriculum design, grant management for multimillion-dollar projects focused on expansion initiatives; she also led successful accreditation processes without recommendations from accrediting bodies.
