By the first quarter of 2026, West Virginia United Health System, Inc. and West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. owned Fairmont Medical Center, according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This nursing home, found in Marion County, has been under their ownership since Sept. 1, 2023.

Fairmont Medical Center operates as a non-profit organization.

Throughout this period, the facility held a five-star overall CMS rating, surpassing West Virginia’s state nursing home average of 2.9. CMS bases its ratings on health inspection results, staffing metrics, and evaluations of resident care quality.

CMS data show Fairmont Medical Center served an average of 28 residents each day during the first quarter of 2026, offering 30 available beds. Presently, the center functions within a hospital.

For the first quarter of 2026, Fairmont Medical Center reported no fines or penalties issued.

There were two non-profit nursing homes in operation within Marion County, West Virginia, during this time.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the country’s older adult population continues to increase while numbers of younger Americans drop. Between 2020 and 2024, the population aged 65 and older rose 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicates that nearly half of Americans in this age group—close to 28 million people—could need long-term care and services, with more than one-third possibly requiring nursing home placement in the future.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
