Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center held the distinction of being Randolph County’s largest nursing home in the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility made available a total of 111 beds—13 more than the Randolph County average during that time. Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center provided support to an average of 104 residents across the first quarter.

The center received an overall CMS rating of 5 out of 5, well above the average of 2.9 earned by nursing homes statewide in West Virginia.

For the same quarter, Nella’s at Autumn Lake Healthcare ranked second in bed count with 100, while Autumn Lake Healthcare at Crystal Springs was third with 84 beds available.

By the close of the first quarter of 2026, Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center had incurred one fine totaling $8,278 and had also received one penalty.

The county recorded one non-profit nursing home within its borders.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates continue to show the population of older adults in the nation is increasing while younger age groups are declining. Between 2020 and 2024, the population age 65 and over in America rose by 13%, as the segment under 18 decreased by 1.7%. Across the past 100 years, the number of older adults in the U.S. expanded from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

Findings from a 2021 study suggest that about half of Americans in this age category—around 28 million people—could need long-term services and supports. The research also indicates that over a third may ultimately require care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
