U.S. Census Bureau estimates show an ongoing rise in the number of older adults nationwide while numbers for younger populations decline. From 2020 to 2024, Americans aged 65 and over increased by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease for those under 18. The country’s older population has seen steep growth over the past century—from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study indicated that nearly half of U.S. adults age 65 and older, or about 28 million, may need long-term services and supports, and that over one-third might eventually receive care through a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
